With its close orbital proximity, tidal locking to the gas giant, rapid orbital period, and unusual axial tilt, New Andorra's atmosphere and climate are unlike that of any other colonized bodies. Because the "near side" of the moon perpetually faces Denebola C, it only receives direct solar illumination for short periods immediately before and after it moves into the gas giant's shadow. When in the giant's shadow, during the night, the tidally-locked face of the moon is instead illuminated by Denebola C's massive aurora blooms, alongside stunningly bright auroras in New Andorra's own ionosphere.

In certain cases, if the moon passes through one of Denebola C's plumes of electromagnetic particulate, the resulting reaction in the ionosphere can form auroras bright enough to approach daytime illumination. During the day, the near side briefly receives direct solar illumination before transitioning to indirect illumination reflected off of the surface of Denebola C. In contrast, the "far side" of the moon, facing away from the gas giant, receives direct solar illumination throughout the day, but is plunged into near-total darkness throughout the night. This convoluted orbit causes New Andorra's near side to remain significantly cooler than the far side, resulting in a lake-studded temperate rainforest environment, coated in bio-luminescent flora that rapidly bloom during daytime hours. In contrast, New Andorra's far side is characterized by a warmer and drier climate, with vast grasslands cleaved apart by deep river canyons and small forests.

Despite being outside of the expected habitable zone of the Denebola System, the high concentration of atmospheric argon insulates the moon by trapping heat generated from geologic processes. Argon's relatively high weight, compared to trace atmospheric elements such as hydrogen and helium, also limits the moon's rate of atmospheric escape, preserving the greenhouse effect. While the argon-heavy atmosphere is perfectly breathable for humans, the high concentration causes a mild narcotic effect. As a result, the majority of New Andorran colonies utilize closed-loop air circulation systems in order to dilute the argon concentration with the less-narcotic nitrogen.

Points of Interest

The stunning atmospheric effects of New Andorra serve as a major source of the colony's income, with tourism rates consistently increasing year over year, in spite of increased antagonism from radical separatists and the system's close proximity to Arachnid territory. The New Andorran Board of Travel and Tourism, founded in 2237, has found enormous success in promoting New Andorra as an idyllic tropical holiday destination, even advertising the narcotic effects of the natural argonox atmosphere.

Far from being a simple vacation getaway, New Andorra's capital of Takenjin has blossomed into a Federation research hub, boasting one of the galaxy's finest Federation Forward Research Laboratories, which specializes in experimental Cherenkov technology, electromagnetic shielding, terraforming research, genetic experimentation, and atmospheric weapons development. While exotic resource exploitation was once the backbone of New Andorra's economy, Denebola C's growing atmospheric volatility has handicapped the once-booming orbital mining industry by drastically increasing the risk of upper-atmosphere mineral extraction. Research has shown that the growing volatility of the gas giant is an entirely natural process, and that it is unrelated to classified FFRL experiments on climate weaponization.

Denebola C's electromagnetic superstorms frequently disrupt communications to New Andorra, resulting in occasional short-term periods of communication blackouts. In addition, vessels lacking electromagnetic shielding may lose central power if struck by an electromagnetic plume. The Federation has advised non-military vessels to avoid traveling in close proximity to the gas giant.


Colonization and Growth

Discovered and colonized by distinguished citizen, researcher, and resource exploitation investor Thomas Takenjin in 2211, New Andorra initially served as a habitable base of operations for future orbital mining efforts in the Denebola System. In 2224, Takenjin's longtime business partner Raul Mundus suddenly revealed himself as a separatist traitor to the Federation, assassinating Takenjin and forcefully taking control over the development of Takenjin's innovative shielded orbital mining platforms, blocking all avenues of communication with the Federation. After two years, the inexperienced Mundus had found no solution to shield the fledgling colony from the devastating effects of Denebola C's electromagnetic superstorms, angering the increasingly desperate colonists. A small group of Federation loyalists bypassed Mundus' communication blockade and asked the Federation for assistance. A week later, on January 21st, 2227, the AFC-BC 144 Josef František arrived in orbit over New Andorra, deploying the 57th Mobile Infantry Battalion. After a mere two days of conflict, the 57th captured Mundus and regained control over the colony. Raul Mundus was stripped of his former citizenship and summarily executed.

Following Takenjin's untimely death, New Andorra's first surface colony was renamed in his honor and declared the capital city. Once order was restored and treasonous sentiment pacified by Military Intelligence, the Federation took ownership of resource exploitation rights and established a Federation Forward Research Laboratory in the city of Takenjin. On January 23rd, 2228, FFRL researchers finalized their research and implemented cutting-edge terraforming technology that stabilized and dramatically strengthened the weak lunar ionosphere. Entirely due to the Federation's timely assistance and expertise, New Andorra's Federation-sponsored orbital mining operations rapidly expanded throughout the Denebola System. In addition, New Andorra's beautiful auroras are directly attributable to the Federation's intervention. Without the Federation, there would be no industry, no mining, and no tourism in New Andorra.

The Federation initially expanded their military presence in the system, establishing military facilities on the moons of Vignemale and Monte Perdido in 2230 and 2235, but soon discovered that Denebola C's worsening superstorms caused the gas giant's magnetosphere to fluctuate wildly, exposing the outer moons to solar winds that rendered permanent occupation impossible. Without any significant evidence of anarcho-separatist sentiments in the general population, and with the Fleet stretched thin in the face of rapid colonial expansion, the Federation's presence in the system slowly withered away.

Fall to Arachnids

On March 2nd, 2278, the Arachnids invaded the Denebola System and incited a system-wide evacuation of civilians and citizens as Mobile Infantry and Fleet assets desperately tried to protect their escape. Against a tide of insurmountable Arachnids, the last bastions of defense on New Andorra fell along with those on Dionysus, and Denebola C.
