Duty

A lifetime of being spoon-fed Federation propaganda has left you the model citizen: you are driven solely by a desire protect the body politic, as you enthusiastically soaked up during your history and moral philosophy classes.

Career

Three square meals a day, lots of physical activity and a snug, cozy bed roll waiting for you when you get home - military life ain't so bad after all. Maybe instead of doing a two year term of service, you might rank up, take OCS, and go career?

Education

A term of service will entitle you to go to college on the Federation dime - setting you up for a life in a profession of your choosing.

Politics

You want to exact meaningful change - but in order to run for office, you must first complete a term of service.

Children

Your character's family oriented - and the Federation doesn't allow you to have more than one kid unless you've done a term of service.

Poverty

You grew up in poverty or had a life with few prospects that were appealing to you - by joining the M.I., you're not only going to earn a trade and your citizenship, but you'll get to see the galaxy.

Grief/Revenge

"Nothing lives in what was once called the Latin paradise - Buenos Aires has been wiped off the Earth". Your character's motivated by grief or revenge - the bugs whacked Argentina, now it's payback time.

Chaos

Maybe there was drinking involved. Maybe there wasn't. Fuck it, enlisting seemed like a fun idea at the time.
